Magical Birds of Colombia

Colombia Expedition

Day 1/ Arrival day. Transfer in to our Hotel in Medellin City. Our private transportation and Naturalist/Photography Guide will take you to your Hotel. Overnight at Medellin.

Day 2/ Medellin – Mid Elevation Pacific Side. This is a beautiful destination that will guarantee one of the most breathtaking birds in the world, and most importantly, many photo opportunities. Our day will start with breakfast at our hotel, followed by a bus ride to today’s location. We will arrive by lunch time and will enjoy our first visit to photograph the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock.  This is a special place where several males come to display every day, which means we will have many opportunities to get awesome shots. Overnight at the same photography location.  All the meals and entrances are included.

Day 3/ Mid Elevation Pacific side full day. Today we will start with the first daylight by enjoying a delicious local breakfast.  Immediately after we will depart to one of our Hummingbirds/Tanagers locations. Here our feeders are visited by the Flame-rumped Tanager, Bay-headed Tanager, Scrub Tanager and many other species which come by for a photo. After lunch we will return to the Cock-of-the-Rock location for a second session with those gorgeous birds. Overnight at the same photography location.  All the meals and entrances are included.

Day 4/ Mid Elevation Pacific Side – Manizales area Location #1. Right after breakfast we will depart for our next location.  Arriving mid-afternoon and we will spend the rest of the afternoon here.  This place is the home of the Andean Motmot, the Black-breasted Mango (Hummingbird), and the Crimson-backed Tanager.  These are just a few of the magnificent birds we will be able to enjoy and photograph at our new location. Overnight at the same photography location.  All the meals and entrances are included.

Day 5/ Manizales area Location #1 Full Day. A full day to continue with the amazing birds at this location, including the Endemic Colombian Chachalaca, the Gray-headed Tanager and the Bronzy Inka Hummingbird.  We will spend the entire day by the feeder’s area which is constantly visited by the most colorful birds. All the meals will be served at the lodge. Overnight at the same photography location.  All the meals and entrances are included.

Day 6/ Manizales area Location #1-Manizales area Location #2. Having an early departure to our next destination, we will move from the middle elevations to the highlands of Colombia. On the way to our hotel we will stop at a great place.  Here our targets will be a couple of Antpitta species including the Crescent-faced Antpitta. Then we will visit a hummingbird’s heaven to photograph the Sword-billed Hummingbird, Shinning Sunbeam, Sparkling-violet Ears and many, many more hummingbird species. Overnight at the same photography location.  All the meals and entrances are included.

Day 7/ Manizales area Location #2 – Manizales area location #3: A full day will be dedicated again to this beautiful area.  We will depart to our morning destination taking a short ride to the home of an AMAZING and Endemic Hummingbird of Colombia’s Central Andes, the Buffy-helmet Crest. We will return to our lodge by lunch and will spend the rest of the afternoon shooting at the hotel setups.  Some of our targets will be the second largest hummingbird in the world, the Great-sapphire Wing (6-7 inches), and some highland Tanagers as well. At the end of the afternoon we will depart to our next destination. Overnight at the same photography location.  All the meals and entrances are included.

Day 8/ Manizales area Location #3: We have another incredible day ahead of us.  Today we will visit a Nature Reserve where they have been calling the Antpittas for several years which means we will have many species to photograph. We will start with an endemic species of Colombia, the Brown-banded Antpitta and then one of my very favs, the Chestnut-crowned Antpitta.  That is not all though, as this area offers opportunities for shots of the gorgeous Tanagers, Fruit Eaters and hummingbirds that frequent the feeders. Overnight at the same photography location.  All the meals and entrances are included.

Day 9/ Manizales – Cali. Moving to another region in Colombia, we will ride on the bus from Manizales to Cali.  On the way, we will stop at Buga to visit a wetland and enjoy a wonderful boat ride. Snail kite, Striated heron, Spectacled parrotlet, horn screamer and many more amazing species of birds inhabit this magical place. After our boat ride we will continue driving to our next destination. Overnight at the same photography location.  All the meals and entrances are included.

Day 10/ Cali full day. This day will be dedicated to photographing the most remarkable tanagers from Colombia, including the endemic Multicolor Tanager.  We will spend the day at this awesome location. Overnight at the same photography location.  All the meals and entrances are included.

Day 11/ Cali full day. Today we will spend our last day shooting in Colombia.  We will be photographing a number of fascinating birds including the Black-capped Tanager, Golden Tanager, Red-headed Barbet plus some of the most iconic hummingbirds of South America like the Booted-racket Tail, Long-tailed Sylph, Andean Emerald and many more. Overnight at the same photography location.  All the meals and entrances are included.Day 12/Cali – Airport. It is time to go home with thousands of breathtaking images and unforgettable memories of your Colombian birding adventure.  Our minivan will transport you to the local airport in Cali and bid you farewell for your flight home.
